Well then .... it's 2014 soon to be '15 and I am embarking on my locked in for the Winter period of time with my instrument friends. Don't get me wrong..... I love the good weather and great weather available out doors in Kentucky eight months out of the year. But late Autumn and then Winter give me the grays. So my answer is to delve into my instruments and my musical education. I set goals for this period of time and occasionally even achieve them. This "year" ... hmmmm... practice notation reading everyday ...... OK ... Work on my Western Swing backup chords .... now some tunes .......... ahhh but which ones ...... Any suggestions? R/

No suggestions on tunes (I don't even know which ones to work on myself) -- just wondering what you're planning to use to work on reading and Western Swing backup. I'm working on reading, too, these days ("every day" is the goal, but "every once in awhile" is the reality), and Western Swing is down the road somewhere (not too far, I hope). Best wishes.

Steve Kaufman has a twenty Swing tunes every Parking lot picker should know set of lessons that is written on three levels for Swing standards. For Western Swing chord backup I am studying
amazon.com/Mel-Western-Swing-G...315310103 .
This book is written by Joe Carr Western Swing Guitar Styles which is published by Mel Bay. For reading I use anything as long as it is written in treble cleft it just doesn't matter. I do like to work with something that has a companion CD or DVD so I can check my work. R/

Good to know -- thanks! I have the Carr book, and have my eye on Kaufman's, for after I get past the first two volumes in the Flatpicking Essentials series. For reading, I'm in the middle of Mel Bay's Modern Method, Grade One. My 11-year-old (a fiddle player) is a far better note reader than I am, and can't help laughing about it from time to time. Keeps me humble . . .
All the best,
Jeff
