Dogs are incredible creatures. Almost genetically identical to wolves, dogs are wired up quite differently. It's incredible to realize that a chihuahua could technically mate with a wolf and have viable puppies. Thd chihuahua would need a stepladder, of course to perform the service, but it could happen.

So what happened with dogs?

We happened.

Apparently there are things about humans that have made dogs into dogs. First of all only the tamer, less aggressive wolves ever started hanging around people. A remarkable thing happens when tame wolves start interbreeding with tame wolves they turn into dogs. Their color changes. Their dispositions change. Their tails curl up sometimes, They develop floppy ears and start changing size and head shape. I few generations of selective breeding and you've got everything from St Bernards to terriers.

It appears that canines come equipped with all that we need to make puppies out of them. It turns out that when we make dogs out of them, they get smarter and they learn to love us unequivocally. All that gets packed into a furry friend-for-life.

They eat anything we give them, preferring our food to their own. You can feed them chili and they never complain of the heartburn. They follow us around, content to lie at our feet, walk at our side, fetch frisbees and tennis balls and comfort us in our pain.
