After a number of years working out the details I have finally launched my very own camp called Janie's Jumpstart! Please visit the website www.janiesjumpstart.com for all the info! Here are some details to whet your appetite!
GUITAR PLAYERS! If you have always wanted to know how to play Old Time style guitar then this camp is for you! Kellie Allen is one of the top guitar players in Old Time Music and this is a rare chance to learn from Kellie, pick her brains and really improve your playing...oh and have fun too!
Janie's Jumpstart Oxford, PA (January 2014) is a weekend long music camp with great Old Time musicians and highly experienced teachers-Jane Rothfield (fiddle), Hilarie Burhans (clawhammer banjo) and Kellie Allen (guitar). Students will be in a small class setting (maximum 8 students per instructor) and have over 12 hours of instruction and 6+ hours of jamming! The focus of this camp is to help you get to the next level in your playing and of course to have a lot of fun! In addition to small group and individual classes, there will be band/jam sessions to help you learn how to “play well with others” as well as listening sessions dedicated to original source material. Jane, Hilarie and Kellie love to teach and love to play so this weekend will be a whole lot of fun too!
January 2014 Old Time Music Weekend Camp The January 17-20, 2014 Janie's Jumpstart is devoted to Old Time music. It’s a unique opportunity to learn from and spend quality time with Jane, Hilarie and Kellie in a comfortable country home setting. Plus fresh and tasty food overseen by banjo teacher and Executive Chef/Owner of Restaurant Salaam in Athens, Ohio, Hilarie Burhans!
This camp is designed for the intermediate/advanced level musician who wants to not only increase and develop their repertoire of Old Time music, but also to work on techniques and strategies to get to the next level in their playing. Within the small group and individual sessions with instructors, you will have a tremendous opportunity to work with and learn from your teacher for the weekend. In addition to the individual instrument classes, you will have the opportunity to work with the other instructors in a “band” class. This is not a "learn as many tunes as possible" camp, although you will learn many tunes-it is more about playing the tunes better!
I got the idea for Janie's Jumpstart because I found that many of the students I have taught over the years enjoyed and benefited from my teaching style and approach. I helped them not only learn tunes and fiddle styles but also taught them how to add musicality to their playing with a focus on strategies like rhythm, technique, listening skills, chords, accompaniment and improvisation. I wanted to offer a camp that would give musicians the opportunity to work intensively in small groups with players who are not only excellent musicians and performers but are also great TEACHERS! The Jumpstart model is focused on helping musicians move to the next level in their playing and musicianship, with plenty of fun and camaraderie thrown in! Host a Jumpstart weekend camp in your town! Contact me (Jane Rothfield) if you are interested in bringing a Janie's Jumpstart weekend camp to your town. Ideas for genre specific (Old Time, Celtic, Cajun etc) or instrument specific camps are welcome! |
