I'll try to keep this from turning into a political cat fight. It's more of an observation of how screwed up we've become in trying not to offend anyone.
I write for a (very) low-paying free lance content mill called Demand Studios. I get $3 to $15 a story and if I write fast, I can keep enough food on the table and gas in the car to maintain my job hunt.
In this new economy, old guys like me can't even get a job at McDonald's anymore. There are 50 people in line for every job and a McDonald's Human Resources Director told me he'd much rather hire someone that's 16 and going to stay a while, than a 56 year old with bad knees who's going to take the first decent job that's offered him and leave them high and dry.
I don't blame him. So, I work for peanuts and pound the keys 16 hours a day now to keep the lights on since my jobs went to Washington for recycling at a date to be named later.
Some of the editors (mostly 20-somethings fresh out of University of Texas) are pretty decent, but some of them really get their egos fed by nattering at us old guys and making us rewrite stuff. The weirdest rewrite request yet, though came down last week.
I wrote a piece about how to replace your hard drive in your computer. As part of it, I wrote that if you keep the old one, it should be moved to the middle position on the IDE ribbon cable and the jumpers on the back of the drive set to the "Slave" position while the new drive should be placed on the end and set to the "Master position. I made one other comment about the second drive being "slaved" to the master.
The editor who pulled my article sent it back to me with instructions to remove the offensive language or if that was the correct term, to "write around" the offending terminology.
I wrote back that it would be silly to do that since master/slave was written on the jumper diagram on the drive case and besides, Bill Gates had not yet seen fit to emancipate all hard drives.
They accepted the story, but apparently discussed the issue in editorial staff meeting because five day s later, I got another one back - same request. "Find a different word for it!"
I would like everyone's help in this matter since, what with the rewrite and explaining it to this editor-child I spent two and a half hours writing a $15 story. I'd like everyone to write a letter to Bill Gates today and ask him to free the slave drives.
You know it's the right thing to do.
Tom
