Notes: Here is a blazing Don Reno original guitar instrumental (one of the few pieces I know written specifically for bluegrass flatpicking guitar), "Tarnation". Unusual for bluegrass guitar, it is in the uncapoed key of F major, and also has a unique chord progression. Has some nice licks that can be used in other songs, and is really fun to play. At the speed it's normally played at, it's fairly difficult. The first break of this tune is almost note for note like Don's break, but the other two are mostly my variations. A good tune to improvise upon. Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!

Notes: I always thought the intro where Thile sings and percussively chops out the beat on the mandolin was cool but felt the guitarist should have been doing something there as well. It occurred to me one day that maybe some crosspicking would fit in there nicely so I started messing around with that idea and came up with this. I like the extra dynamic it gives to the otherwise sparse intro and it has become my standard crosspicking workout/exercise song -- great for keeping your right hand in shape -- and I thought I'd share the TAB for it.
Here's a link to me playing the song on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=212soGvTM5I
For the most part, the fretting hand does very little but hold some
chord fragments leaving the picking hand to do all the hard work. I
might add that "crosspicking" doesn't just mean the basic
"1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2" string picking pattern to me and the TAB reflects
that sentiment. Sometimes I just endlessly roll triplets
"1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3..." (which creates a nice, syncopated feel)
or intentionally hit the middle string instead of "crossing" over it
back to the low string if that's what feels right and keeps the timing
how I want it.

Notes: This is my transcription of the first A/B parts of the traditional song, "The Girl I Left Behind Me" from my YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXflhv_V3Qc). Both a .PDF and the TablEdit .TEF files are attached to this post. Additionally, a slow-motion video of just the first A and B part can be downloaded from my webpace to aid in learning the song: (http://home.comcast.net/~jpittman2/sandbox/TGILBM_SlowMo.wmv). Enjoy! --Jamey

Notes: Miranda does this tune in F - I'm playing C, Capo'd to the 5th fret, giving us the pitch of F...
This arrangement has some finger picking in it as well as straight out strumming.

Notes: Remember I took Norman Blake's "D-18 Song" and paraphrased it for Deering banjos... a lot of the lyrics are the same...
It'll give you the melody and the chords, even though they are tabbed out for banjo, the chord symbols can be read by anyone...
I'll try to do a guitar conversion by this weekend... and put the original lyrics back in...

Notes: The classic fiddle tune, Turkey In The Straw, arranged for flatpicking guitar. There are 4 breaks. The first is the easiest, and is based loosely upon Don Reno's recording of the tune ("The Golden Guitar Of Don Reno). The second break is my standard break to the tune, and in the first part is a "perpetual motion" take on the tune consisting of 8th notes for the whole break. Also, for all breaks except the first, there is a slightly modified chord progression, which was "invented" by a fiddler friend & I and we like to play it this way; it can be easily modified to the standard version. The 3rd break is just another variation on the basic melody. The 4th break is the same as the 2nd, but features twin guitars. The 2nd part is not tooo hard, so give it a try with your flatpicking pal! Has a Rhythm Guitar & Bass rhythm track. Have fun!
