You can always do the G, C, D runs/riffs at the end of a musical phrase. And yes, there are many basic licks/riffs for guitar. Get a good beginner book and maybe it will have a few to learn. Go to jams and festivals and listen to other guitar pickers and if you hear something that you like, ask if they'll share it with you.
I also play/played banjo and guitar. I am not aware of a good "lick" book for beginners. I like Steve Kaufman "Parking Lot" series for guitar. You get notation/tab/recordings for 20 tunes. There is a beginner, an intermediate, and advanced version of each tune. You will have to do most banjo players d0. Get comfortable with lick and start substituting that lick for another lick in the same key. Over time you develop a "feel" for where the lick will work. If you buy one of the books, get "Series 1". The price seems high, but with 3 versions of 20 tunes you will haves 60 lessons. All tunes are in the key normally played at jams and all tunes are commonly played.
