Hi folks,
Ive just got into flatpicking over the last year and have been progressing steadily. I've a few fiddle tunes I'm working on; been playing them at 50-60bpm. That's fine. As I up the tempo, I hear a clicking sound to the right. I analyse and realise that when I pick the string with the plectrum, the tip of it is actually hitting the guitar body beneath the strings. Any advice on how I can stop this? As I say, it's all fine at slower tempo. Why is my RH technique changing? And what can I do to fix it? Kind regards, Sean
Sounds like you're trying to play too fast too soon and your technique changes possibly because you tense up when trying to play faster???
Maybe you're digging in deeper as you try to play at a faster tempo. As far as fixing the problem, usually practice, practice, practice will help more than anything else.
When you try to play too fast too soon, you become sloppy. It's okay to try to speed up occasionally, but when you start making mistakes or your techique suffers, then slow it back down.
I am guessing, but I think you are not positioning your wrist correctly. Youtube may have an answer. If all fails, have a guitar lessons and your playing technique checked out. If there is a jam, there is most likely someone who can watch you play and offer advice. Correcting your problem will makes things awkward for a while. I sure sure Youtube has a video on using your wrist when playing guitar.
