You might check our teacher's list to see if there's one in your area. Left hand side of page, under Learn, click on Find a Teacher. Use the advanced search to narrow it down to town, county, country, etc.

You might also ask on the Banjohangout as there are a lot of members from Canada who also play guitar and might know of someone near you.

There is a series of books titled "Flatpick Essentials". Recordings come with the book. There are quite a few volumes, but Volume 1:Rhythm, Bass Runs and Fill Licks will get you started. The book explains in detail what is happening. So you can understand what you are doing. The first two volumes are very helpful. Better a good book than a bad instructor.

If you aren't familiar with basic scale and chord theory, go to a library and learn (1) chromatic scale (2) diatonic scale and (3) basic chord theory. With this knowledge you will be able to answer a lot of your own questions and better understand what is happening.

Steve Kaufman's "Parking Lot Tunes" series is the best book for learning tunes. 20 commonly played tunes. A beginner, intermediate, and advanced version of each tune. Recordings for every tune. Tab and notation. The recording also has Steve offering verbal help with more difficult things.

The book seems expensive, but you get 3 versions of 20 tunes. That is like having 60 lessons. I own 4 different series. I recommend Series 1. It helps to memorize a melody before you try to learn it. I recommend Series 1 because it contains the most tunes you will encounter when playing with others. You can get the books on Steve Kaufman's website.
