Been playing a lot more guitar lately. At present I am focusing on fingerboard familiarity and expanding my chord repertoire. I want to work on chord progressions for tunes that use a wide range of chords, tunes that are played at jams and both instrumentals and vocal tunes.

I only need the names of the tunes. I subscribe to the ultimate guitar website and can obtain the chord progression and other information there. I am comfortable with the chords used for most tunes, but want to play chords like augmented, diminished, and others. I don't want anything as complex as jazz. A good example would be the tune "Gentle On My Mind" which can contain 8 different chords.

Here is how I now practice playing above the first position. It comes in handy learning variations for tunes and improves keyboard familiarity. I am familiar with scales and use notation when I play fiddle. I will start with a note on a higher position on the low "E" string. Then I play or figure out how to play the scale for that key starting on that string. Then I read the musical notation and play the tune using that scale. Eventually I just play the tune in that position by "ear". Since I am become more familiar with the fingerboard and is producing new variations it seems to be working. If anybody has any suggestions on improving keyboard familiarity they will be appreciated.

After I become comfortable using these chords on the guitar, I will work on using them on the 5 string banjo.

Thank You
