I saw an appraisal of a 1951 Martin D28. It was in very good condition. I don't think there was a case. The estimated value was $5,000. I thought it would be worth more than that. I am hoping a more informed member can furnish their estimate. Usually my estimates are pretty close to the expert, but this time I overestimated the value.

DH .....What one sells for is entirely up to condition and original tuners and yes OHC makes a difference. The number of repaired cracks or cracks needing repair. Fingerboard , fret, neck angle , neck straight or warped or twisted, condition of finish, is the finish original or over sprayed . I wuould guess, lacking pictures, that this is a low ball offer for a 50's Brazilian rosewood Martin D28 guitar as a mahogany D18 goes fo near the 5000$ offer. R/

If the guitar is, in fact, very good condition, then $5000 seems way low, based on prices I've seen on comparable Martins in the past.
As of this moment, Elderly has a 1951 D-28 on consignment listed for $10,900.00. The description says "Good sound, spruce top, nice looking Brazilian rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck (reset at some point), ebony fretboard (refretted) and bridge, Brazilian rosewood headstock overlay, waffle back tuners, newer 1-11/16" nut, 25.4" scale, HSC, VGC+ except 1 repaired top crack and 1 repaired side crack."
I believe their consignment fee is 15%, so the seller would get $9265.00. And there's probably some room to move built into that, but still, it's well above $5K.

That seems low considering I see people wanting $2500-$3500 for 70,80,&90's d-28's. Too much in my opinion for a used 1990. I know in fact that you could buy a new d-35 in 1990 for $1600 with a case. It comes from years and years of marketing. So now people see Martin/Gibson/older guilds/etc and they immediately think they are worth a fortune.
