I am curious to know just how much tightening is good to obtain a nice true "banjo" sound. I tightened the head on my banjo several times, the first time it worked perfectly, but the other times it seemd that the "plunk" just went out of the banjo. What can I do to obtain the desired sound from my banjo?

Experiment with a torque wrench. That way you know a definative number for th amount of tension and can keep track.

Also the downward pressure of the strings on the bridge which is obtained
by adjusting the tailpiece.

Depends on the sound you're looking for. Generally, the tighter the head, the brighter the sound, and the looser the head, the plunkier. If the head breaks, it's too tight. A lot of banjo players like to tune the head to a specific note (like G# for a flathead). You could try talking to Steve Davis on the BHO or searching for the "Quarter Method" on the BHO for a lot information on head tension.

If you tighten to much the head will break. Somewhere in that is a banjo joke. Would it be that the sound is perfect!!!! Actually, I have to do some work on mine so this thread is informative for my small amount of banjo picking.
