I just spent a few minutes looking for Jamey’s videos on youtube, and then expanded it to Google.  He seems to have disappeared.  I finally found a youtube playlist someone made of him, and every video had been deleted.  No listing for him on facebook either.

What’s up?  You say you’ve been in contact with him?

Yes, I have traded some emails with him. He has stopped teaching and is now a software engineer or developer of some kind. Why he removed all of his videos from Youtube is a mystery.

Jamey gave me lessons when I lived in Atlanta several years ago. After that he stopped (just like now), devoted himself to software stuff, worked his tail off, made a few bucks, but in doing so it robbed him of any extra time for lessons, YouTube clips, etc.

I'd noticed a few months ago this his YouTube stuff was gone. I miss it... it was a great source of what great flatpicking SHOULD sound like!

What is more odd is that he never kept them for himself. He said he had no record of those videos in his private collection. Too bad, he is a helluva player and for a guy like me that needs that kind of help it's unfortunate. He also seems like a really cool guy, although I have yet to meet him.

I made a heck of a discovery today.  I found a treasure trove of Jamey's videos on my hard drive.  Apparently I downloaded a bunch of them way back when, but because they were named "Flatpicker Hangout" instead of Jamey's name (the naming convention for videos downloaded from the video library here, I guess), they escaped my notice.  I don't intend to share them with the world, but thought Jamey's fans here on the FPHO would appreciate seeing them, so I uploaded them to Youtube as "Unlisted".  Until further notice, these are being used "without permission" so please be judicious about who you share these links with.

I don't know why he deleted them, and I feel kind of funny doing this, but they're too good not to share.  If he asks me to take them down, I will.  Otherwise, enjoy.  There are some real gems here.

I took a couple of lessons from Jamey in 2010 and really got a lot out of them.  Jamey is an incredible picker and a really nice fellow too.

I've been working on Bury Me Beneath the Willow for about a year now :) and can play it pretty decent up to about 200  bpm (in 4/4 of course.)  I changed a few notes here and there to make it easier for me to play at speed, but it's fairly close to Jamey's tab.  It's some brutal crosspicking at speed and truly phenomenal at the speed Jamey did it.

Nick plans to incorporate this into a vocal arrangement so he doesn't see the need to learn the B part, but I think it's the coolest sounding part. Hopefully once we learn the A part, the B will come easier.



We spent about 20 minutes last night trying to learn it from the video before falling back to the tab. It's just too fast. Jamey's a monster.

Edit: Another thing we noticed is that the tab is correct, but the notation is not.  Nick prefers notation so that messed him up for a few minutes.  As far as I can tell the notation is in Eb (the key) and the tab is in C (the position).

Adding to the above post -- I watched the video and picked through "Bury Me" last night and the measures I tabbed are pretty close to the video, but the subsequent part is a bit different, and I don't include the run Jamey puts at the end although sometimes  I will improvise a run there.

I never really thought of this song as having an "A" and "B" part because the melody doesn't really change, I just think of it as variations of a single part.

You're right. I was thinking of the chorus as theB part, but I took another look at it and the basic melody in the chorus doesn't change much. He does add some variations the second time through that aren't tabbed out.

Cool, we'll work on that tonight.  He performed this at a local jam this past weekend.  I told him not to do the crosspicking, I didn't think he was ready, but of course he didn't listen.  It was a little rough, but he actually pulled it off.  I can tell it's going to take a while to get it sounding really smooth.

Do you do the DUDU like Jamey?  Nick can play it pretty well DDU, but really struggles with DUDU.  Don't say any of that out loud!

Yes, I play it strictly DUDU as I've never been able to pick DDU (I'm going to work on that as soon as I master DUDU).  Jamey's tab note say his version was an interpretation of Clarence White's which was probably played DDU.

Cool, I hadn't seen that. I personally think the DUDU has a smoother sound if you can get it. If you compare Jamey's and Clarence's, I won't say which is better, but Jamey's definitely sounds more smooth and refined. How much of that is due to the crosspicking technique is hard to say, but based on my own experimentation DUDU is a little smoother. I'm losing the battle of getting Nick to play it that way, though, and his guitar teacher (who's a million times the player I am) has told him either way is fine so I guess it's not that big a deal. I get nitpicky about stuff I shouldn't sometimes. I do think DUDU crosspicking is a good skill to learn, but we may have to find a different song to learn it on.

DUDU usually does sound smoother to me whereas DDU has more of a "jumpy" syncopated feel to it.  Sometimes I prefer the DDU sound, it just depends on the song and the arrangement.

Lots of folks advise beginners to learn DUDU and then learn other patterns later.  That's what I did, but now DUDU is so ingrained that it's going to take a LONG time before I can pick DDU with any kind of speed at all.  I don't know if it would have been a good idea to work on other patterns sooner or not...

Based on the things you've posted, whatever Nick is doing is working pretty darn good!

Yeah I can't decide if it's hurting him not to learn DUDU or if he's better off starting with DDU and learning it later. I guess I adhere to the philosophy of "whatever is harder, that's what you should work on." Which is a much easier decision when you're not the one doing the work...

Newbie here. Also greenhorn flatpicker. I took about a month's worth of lessons off of Jamey before he signed off in Jan 2011. I enjoyed the experience and was hoping that flatpicking would take me somewhere. Without a map (Jamey) I went back to jamming with my buddy...same old songs, same old way. We did get better but the plateau was getting too ridiculous. So we both committed to learning something. Flatpicking seems like the right thing for now. It helps rhythm, it helps right hand speed and precision, and it ensures better timing...plus we both like that old timey bluegrass. So here I am - a year later resurrecting my stuff from Jamey. I'm a bit better than I was when we left off cuz I been practicing. But though I knew he wouldn't be teaching I am surprised not only is HE gone completely, but so are all of the wonderful things he had out here.

Apologies for taking this thread over, but it seemed like it was close to what I had to say. I am looking for some of his "other" stuff - Goodbye Blue Sky by Pink Floyd, Battle of Evermore, etc. Does anyone have the YouTube versions of these songs. I am glad that alot of his fiddle tunes stuff is here...I'll make good use of it as well.

A friend directed me to this thread, and I thought I'd take a moment to address a few things...

I got back into software development in January 2011, and decided it was time to close up the teaching biz as a result.  Several factors were involved including finances, repetitive stress injury issues, and other personal matters.  I don't feel any need to elaborate further, and would appreciate if everyone here respects my wishes to just leave it at that.

I do regret deleting those YouTube videos as some found them to be helpful, and I'm very glad some of them were salvaged thanks to a clever member here.  Feel free to make them "public" on YouTube if you wish, but please do not include any contact information for me in the title or description.  Those videos were taken down by me mostly due to the fact I grew tired of answering emails requesting tabs/lessons months after I had closed up shop.  Of course, I should have just edited the descriptions and search terms, but I was feeling cranky and impulsive at the time and simply deleted them instead.  Dumb move on my part but there it is...

I guess it seems weird to some I don't have copies of them readily available, but I just don't.  I've never been particularly good about holding on to recordings/videos of myself.  Honestly, I MIGHT have some of them backed up on DVD somewhere in my office, but I'd have to spend hours trying to dig them up and I'm not inclined to do so.  I don't care for listening to my own recordings so I suppose that contributes to the sorry state of organization when it comes to things like videos.  Sorry.
