THE SECOND ANNUAL TENOR GUITAR GATHERING

                                  ASTORIA, OREGON    JUNE 3-5, 2011

                                        tenorguitargathering.com

The 2nd Annual Tenor Guitar Gathering has shaped up to be an impressive event. We learned what people liked last year, riding and playing on The Trolley (we will be doing that TWICE), and jamming outside of Gordo's Astoria Guitar Company. Everyone who attended last year was duly amazed by Spider Murphy's prowess, and we are happy he will be performing again this year. Spider mentioned having a parade, and so, we have added a "tenor guitar parade" into the mix of events. Two very special evening events will be Friday's tribute to the late Nick Reynolds, the tenor guitarist from The Kingston Trio, who will be inducted into The Tenor Guitar Hall of Fame during the fundraising event for radio station KMUN that will have everyone playing and singing Kingston Trio songs, and Saturday's evening event, An Evening of Tenor Guitars, featuring four very different styles of tenor guitar players from all over the country.

There will be enough time to take a few workshops given by Marcy Marxer, check out the guitars at The Astoria Guitar Company, and be a part of the 200th Anniversary Celebration of the town of Astoria1811-2011.

Here's what will be happening:

Even if you are an advanced player, you are bound to pick up one key technique from TG 101 that you will use, and it will be worth the modest fee. Spider Murphy: Spider may very well be the finest tenor guitar player in the world. He has been playing tenor banjo and tenor guitar for over forty years. Those who were fortunate to attend the first Tenor Guitar Gathering last June, bear witness to this rare talent. We are proud to have him back this year. He's working on a new CD and will hopefully have it available, but nothing beats hearing him sing and play live.

Spider's tenor guitar and voice will dazzle you.

Marcy Marxer: Marcy came as an attendee year, and returns as a headliner. She is all over YouTube on all kinds of stringed instruments. She is a multi-instrumentalist, studio musician, performer, songwriter and producer with over 30 years of experience and a shelf of impressive awards. She has played acoustic music on Emmy Award winning National Geographic specials, platinum shipping Eva Cassidy CD's, and on over 50 recordings and instructional materials created with her partner, Cathy Fink.

Myshkin: She has been evolving for years as one of the most interesting songwriters around, sometimes choosing the tenor guitar, a unique instrument, to fit her unique songs and voice. Visit her impressive website to learn much more about her. Sing Out Magazine describes Myshkin's music as "darkly joyous, endlessly restless, and spellbing. Gypsy, Celtic, cabaret and punk influences, a masterfully mercurial, seductive voice."

Mark Josephs: A lot of people wonder if the founder of The Tenor Guitar Registry, one of the "five tenors" who started tenorguitar.com, and the organizer of the Annual Tenor Guitar Gathering, can actually play the instrument and, if so, what does he sound like. Mark's "folk song material" consists of Buddy Holly and Rolling Stones songs mixed in with a few originals. He may be the only musician using "tremolo"  tonight.

You can learn some of Mark's tenor guitar arrangements, talk to other tenor guitar players about string gauges and how not to break the high A string, and discover all you ever need to know about tenor guitars at the premier web portal for all things tenor: tenorguitar.com

We will board the trolley at the 39th StreetStop, but you can board the Trolley anywhere on the route and meet us if you can't make it to The Coffee Girl stop by noon.

Nick Reynolds and the Kingston Trio

There were many musicians who played the four string tenor guitar over the years, but none were as visible or as well known as Nick Reynolds of The Kingston Trio.

Nick's small four string guitar was on the cover of almost every Kingston Trio Album. And when the Trio performed on television for millions of viewers, musicians took note of Nick's guitar and were moved to find out what kind of instrument it was, and buy one for themselves, so they too, could play like The Kingston Trio and sound like Nick Reynolds.

Nick loved the sound of the small guitar and put a capo on the fifth fret to get an even higher pitched sound. It became The Kingston Trio's sound.

When you ask a tenor guitar player of a certain age, how they first became interested in the tenor guitar, the answer is, in most cases, "because Nick Reynolds played one."

It didn't matter that Nick tuned his tenor like the top four strings of a six string guitar because he was used to playing a baritone ukulele. Followers would acquire a tenor guitar at a music store, and in those days, all major instrument companies made a tenor guitar, or a tenor guitar might be special ordered along with a Mel Bay tenor banjo book to learn the chords.

Long before the "internet" all information was word of mouth.

"It's a tenor guitar! It's tuned like a tenor banjo! Buy a tenor banjo book!"

It is only natural that the personal most responsible, totally without intention, to have made the most serious impact on the promotion and growth of the tenor guitar, the person who most single handedly put this obscure instrument on the map, and the person who has had such an influence on myself, members of The Tenor Guitar Registry, and whose presence is felt at every Tenor Guitar Gathering of any kind, anywhere, should be the very first musician inducted to the Tenor Guitar Hall of Fame.

And so, on this day of June 3, 2011, in the town of Astoria, Oregon, on behalf of tenor guitarists all around the world, we hereby proudly induct Nick Reynolds as the first inductee to The Tenor Guitar Hall of Fame.
