My case for the change to a more inclusive forum...

The BHO does not suffer from having separate sections devoted to specific styles. In fact, I find that one of the draws.
There are many on the BHO that post in both the BG & the OT forums, FTM in the "Other styles" section as well.
This does not hinder the forum for the user. I am sure that it creates more work for Eric and co. (which is much appreciated) but I wonder why anyone would respond negatively to broadening the scope of this forum. (I just answered the poll myself, and I see that at the time of writing, the nay's have it...)
I am positive that the BHO would not be anywhere near the size it is today if it were only the Bluegrass banjo (and really mainly only Earl) HO.

The acoustic guitar is such a broad instrument that can do so many things well, to limit yourself in terms of playing it, or thinking about it, or even just listening to it seems the least logical course of action(s) to me.

The best flatpickers I have ever heard don't JUST play flatpick style. Flatpicking is a tool in the tool box of an accomplished guitarist, and not the be all end all. (Sorry if that is heretical to anyone

I know that there are other forums on the interweb devoted to the acoustic guitar, (though I myself would NEVER go to another site), but not in the style of the "Hangout".

I think that broadening the focus of this forum to include all types of acoustic guitar playing would only serve to strengthen it and grow the membership.

Just my thinkins on it.

TOTALLY agree! Perhaps much of the sucess of the BHO can be attributed to the multi-discipline approach with each having a solid identity and adequate forums for each?
BTW yes Eric...agreed

A vote sounds fair, Id be willing to abide the poll results. There is an opportunity to widen the appeal of this site without disturbing the more focused members.

Eric, I hope you are watching all thats happening. And like Jerry Clower said "shoot up amongst us, someones got to have some relief"

I believe that the broader scope will make this Hangout a far better resource, particularly for beginners. We all came from there whether you can remember or not. My guitar playing started about 1960 and I'm really glad that I have no particular style preferences yet.

My vote is to leave the name as is and add more subcategories for other types of music. This site is one of the few good Flatpicking resources on the web and should be preserved as such, but there's no reason we can't welcome fans of other styles and allow them to participate. Flatpicking is a relatively new style in the grand scheme of things and is just starting to gain some momentum out there - please don't sentence it back down to a subcategory!

Well, there hasn't been a vote submitted for 4 days now. When will the results be considered decisive?

Laurence Diehl - Posted - 09/23/2010:  08:57:17

The result is too evenly divided to be considered decisive. I don't think Eric would make a decision soley based on that poll anyway - unless it was say, 90% one way or another. Interesting that only 200+ could be bothered to vote. Where are the other 3,000 members-in-name-only? Seems like a low percentage of active accounts - which, I suppose, is the problem. Name change or not.

I will be content to wait and see.

newbie or not... I second the motion....please don't make the "F" in "FPH" a subcategory !!!
Yikes!!!

SLKmartin - Posted - 09/24/2010:  15:58:48

This Site is so young , I think we are all newbies , I know iam.

danjo - Posted - 09/28/2010:  14:23:38

well,i guess i'll put my two cents in. i found this site to be perfect for the kind of fiddle tunes that don reno and doc watson sort of made famous.not that there aren't alot of young people playing it now,but if you change it,then you get into chet atkins, django, merle travis and ahost of others.my brain ain't that big, let's see what happens....danjo

I'm sending this out to the email news list today:

There's been an ongoing debate on the Flatpicker Hangout about whether the site should broaden its scope to include all acoustic guitar styles, or remain focused on flatpicking. After much thought, I've decided to keep the site "Flatpicker Hangout" while emphasizing that the site is open to any discussion involving playing the acoustic guitar with picks. (So if it's an acoustic guitar, and you're using a pick--it's all good. Fingerstyle players, solidbody electric guitar discussion--that can go elsewhere.)

This may lead to discussions involving blues, jazz, pop, rock, and other forms of music--but I'm sure the heart and soul of the site will continue to center on the bluegrass/old time music which the term "flatpicking" is often associated with.

Love this! Probably the best solution and one that will keep the site alive, vibrant and not lost in the mix of hundreds of generic acoustic guitar sites... And I'm certain that 95+% of those on this site have joined because of that focus. I like blues, jazz, good fingerstyle, etc., but I love having a site to talk about the intricacies of my favorite genre of guitar playing Thanks Eric.

I have no problems with the site as is, we all just need to participate in the discussions more (civil discussion).
