FIRST ANNUAL TENOR GUITAR GATHERING COMES TO ASTORIA
Musicians and Fans Celebrate and Perform June 4-6

(Astoria, Oregon) … The First Annual Tenor Guitar Gathering makes its debut June 4-6, 2010 in Astoria, Oregon where enthusiasts of all styles, tunings and expertise will celebrate the instrument by attending workshops and performances scheduled throughout the 3-day event. Among the highlights will be a performance by Spider Murphy, one of the country’s top tenor guitarists on Friday night, 9pm at the Ft. George Brewery + Public House (1483 Duane Street). Murphy is also scheduled to share his insights and expertise at a workshop earlier in the day at 4:30pm at the Astoria Guitar Company (399 31st Street).

Other notable participants include Josh Reynolds, son of Kingston Trio founding member Nick Reynolds, who popularized the tenor guitar to a whole generation of fans. Josh will lead a workshop on Saturday at 1:30pm, sharing stories of his dad’s life, career and playing technique, an influence which continues to be felt today.

Also Paul Lestock, an expert tenor guitar luthier and player from Hood River, will be talking about the future of the tenor guitar on Saturday at 10am, and event organizer Mark Josephs will lead several workshops over the 3 days offering instruction for guitarists of every skill level. All workshops will be held at the Astoria Guitar Company starting Friday morning at 10am, along with a special Saturday morning group performance at 11am aboard The Trolley as it rolls through town.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to mix, mingle and jam with others who share the same passion for the tenor guitar,” commented Josephs, who also founded The Tenor Guitar Registry, an on-line club that is a forum to over 1000 tenor guitarists worldwide. “Astoria felt like the perfect setting for this gathering and our hope is to bring this back bigger and better every year.”

Hi!

I spent last week in Astoria working on the 2nd Annual Tenor Guitar Gathering and I want to share with you a little of what went on.

I spoke with Gordon "Gordo" Styler, owner of the Astoria Guitar Company about having workshops on Friday June 3rd, and playing outside, June 4th, like we all did last year, and of course he has fallen in love with us all being there and we all look forward to seeing him again. Gordo's brother, Bill, is an excellent luthier and may unveil a very unique tenor guitar from a suggestion I gave him. You won't believe it until you see it!!!!!!

In fact, The Tenor Guitar Gathering is more than just a unique musical event. It has turned into a place where we have all made new friends and look forward to seeing them almost as much as playing. It wouldn't be the same without Gordo, Jim and Laurell, Marcy Marxer, Spider Murphy, Howard Blumenthal, to name a few folks.

I spent a little time with George Nipp. We played tenor guitars and picked some songs to play as a group in June.

Jim Dyer, who owns the leather shop next door, has built Conestoga Wagons from scratch, tours with his popular local band, The Salty Dogs.....is planning to cook up some fresh salmon and BBQ it out on the deck during the lunch break between workshops on Friday. I just have to give him a head count.

I met with Paul Benoit, The City Manager of Astoria, and told him about the first TG Gathering and plans for the second. He is very enthusiastic about any wholesome event that would continue to bring fun people into the city. I brought along a poster from last year and a large article written by Cate Gable and made into a front page story by Kathleen Strecher, editor of The Daily Astorian.

I sat in on harmonica with Richard T, Dave Ambrose, Jeffrey Reynolds and Larry Aldred, known as The Swing Cats, at Clemente's Restaurant.

There are so many great local musicians, like Randy Weese, whose guitar style reminds me of Doc Watson and Clarence White, who love the sound of the tenor guitar and are happy to spread the word around.

So it was a great trip to Astoria. I need a little time to finalize what happens where at what time and then post it on tenorguitargathering.com .....but I can tell you the town of Astoria is such a perfect place for this, hopefully annual event.

Josef Gault, who manages the Performing Arts Center (PAC) sent me papers that I will be mailing in shortly, to secure the performance center for AN EVENING OF TENOR GUITARS , Saturday June 4th.

I attended a benefit event for the "Chorale" last night at PAC and experienced what a perfect venue it will be for AN EVENING OF TENOR GUITARS. It has a wonderful sound system, great acoustics, ample parking. It is three or four blocks from the Columbia River.

Here are a few pictures of Astoria's Performing Arts Center from the inside and out.

Things are shaping in a very existing way!!!!!!!!!!
