Folks,

I'm pleased to announce the inauguration of a new audio series: The Phil Zimmerman Collection.

Phil has started us out with a gem from the 1969 Berryville Festival.

You'll hear Mike Seeger and Maybelle Carter warming up backstage, then Mike,

Maybelle, and Bill Monroe onstage!

It all starts at http://frobbi.org/zimmermancollection.html

As always, you can also find it on my Picking Page at http://frobbi.org/picking.html

in the "From My Friends" section.

I'll be adding more detail when possible. Corrections and historical background are welcome.

Enjoy!

I thought yesterday's Landreth Collection update was big...until Ken sent me much more 1971 Bean Blossom overnight.

There are three sets from July 17 and eighteen additional sets from June 19.

Again, they're all at http://frobbi.org/audio/landreth/BeanBlossom1971/index.html

And just a while ago, Akira Otsuka and his brother Josh (both former members of the Japanese group Bluegrass 45 that wowed US audiences in the 1970s) discovered a film of that festival at

Hi Folks,

As usual, after I thought I'd found them all, I "discovered" 2 more cassettes. Actually, one was already digitized and the other

was in a stack right next to the computer. What great organization!

Anyway, here are two recordings of Peter Rowan and Tex Logan from the 1979 Berkshire Mountains Bluegrass Festival.

Lamar Grier is on banjo, and his son David comes up for one number in Set 1.

Set 1: frobbi.org/audio/Rowan-Logan-B...e1979.mp3

Set 2:frobbi.org/audio/Berkshire79-R...Logan.mp3

As always, the links are available on my Picking Page at frobbi.org/picking.html

I didn't remember who was on bass and guessed Barry Mitterhoff was on mandolin.

I received a quick answer from picker/photog Phil Zimmerman:

---------------------

"This picture (top of the page) is from July 4, 1978... very likely the same band as your Berkshire Mtns tape:"

bluegrasstime.com/pages/Page%2049.html

---------------------

I probably guessed correctly about Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin and it looks like Roger Mason on bass.

I then realized I might've been able to guess from my 1980 photo...

Enjoy!

Finally I have some more of Ken Landreth's Recording Collection.

Thanks to his hard work you can now hear the 1969 Bean Blossom Sunday Hymn Program.

In this case, the tapes were given to Ken a long time ago by Barbara Thomas of Tahlequah, OK.

Due to possible rain the program was moved to the Barn with less seating, and Monroe requested that

no tape recorders be allowed except for that of Mike Seeger. But Thomas was still able to make a recording.

The tape quality is not great, but at least the program has been documented.

You can hear Doc Watson in Part 3.

The entire Landreth collection (so far) is at http://frobbi.org/landrethcollection.html

I'm thrilled to announce that I've made the complete record album available at http://frobbi.org/cutups-record.html

I couldn't have done it without the help of Travis' son Dennis who provided me the audio; and Eddie Shelton's daughter Linda Shelton Brown who provided the album cover image.

I'm proud to announce I've now been able to start another series of bluegrass recordings,

thanks to another well-known picker.

This time it's the "Doc Hamilton Collection". frobbi.org/hamiltoncollection.html

It starts out with Doc's blockbuster recordings of Flatt & Scruggs in Houston, 1966 and 1967.

The 1967 set has two songs by guests Doc & Merle Watson.

These recordings are obviously even more appropriate with our recent loss of Earl and Doc.

As always, the link is also available on my Picking Page at frobbi.org/picking.html

in the From My Friends section.

There will be more to come.

My sincere thanks to Doc for taking the time to allow us to share his treasures with all of you in the

bluegrass community.

I just received an unexpected treat from an old friend in Clemson.

Bob King sent me his 1986 recording of Doc Watson at the Paramount Theatre

in Peekskill, NY. It's in stunning quality, directly from the sound board...

once some adjustments were made.

Part 1 frobbi.org/audio/king/docwatso...86-1a.mp3

Part 2 frobbi.org/audio/king/docwatso...86-1b.mp3

Part 3 frobbi.org/audio/king/docwatso...986-2.mp3

It's also in the "From My Friends" section on my Picking Page frobbi.org/picking.html

My big, big thanks to Bob for this wonderful surprise!

I've just had the pleasure of adding the Ken Hydinger Collection to my recordings.

frobbi.org/hydingercollection.html

Ken's given us a Jimmy Martin set from Bill Monroe's 1996 Bean Blossom,

only 2 days before Monroe's death. Read Ken's account on the web page.

As always, Ken's collection is also on my Picking Page

Thanks, Ken, and enjoy, everyone!

Another recording from Doc Hamilton...The hits just keep on coming!

Doc just gave me his recording of Larry Sparks at Bean Blossom 1977...

Tom Boyd-banjo, dobro; Mike Carter-bass; Doc Hamilton-fiddle

Actually, I thought I'd posted even more a few days ago...

There's a jam at Bobby Shipley's house in Houston, just before the 1967 Flatt & Scruggs concert.

Pickers are Doc Watson, Paul Warren, Josh Graves, Larry Rice, and Doc Hamilton.

Also there are two tracks of Ralph Rinzler presenting the "Bluegrass Story".

Currently we don't know the date or origin of the recording.

Finally, there's a long set of Jimmy Martin, again with unknown date and origin.

Hopefully we'll find an answer or two. Meanwhile, enjoy!

Correction: The Ralph Rinzler Bluegrass Story that was on the Doc Hamilton Collection page is actually from

June 20, 1977 Bean Blossom in the Ken Landreth Collection at frobbi.org/audio/landreth/Bean...ndex.html

Thank to Ken for keeping me honest!

What an amazing piece of musical history. For as intertwined as the lives of Clarence White and Tony Rice were, I don't think there were many occasions when they jammed as equals. By the time Tony hit his stride as a guitarist, Clarence would have been doing his thing with the Byrds. This recording has to be the jam that Tony mentions on page 54 of his biography:

"It hadn't been but two months before [Clarence died] that Clarence and Suzie were at my house. We even jammed that night and I got a tape of it. It's Larry and I and Bobby Slone, and Clarence."

Seriously Fred, thanks for making all this stuff available.

Thanks, as always Fred, for posting this. Do you happen to know if Monroe ever released a studio recording of Northern White Clouds? (Set 2, song 2.) I have all of his Bear Family box sets and it's not on any of them. A google search seems to suggest that he didn't, which is a shame.

robbif - Posted - 08/17/2012:  18:48:39

Dave, You're very welcome.

Since I don't know the answer, I'll ask around.

Anybody else here that knows?

robbif - Posted - 08/18/2012:  06:00:18

Dave, One answer...

As far as I know, he didn't. There were several songs he wrote and never recorded, as well as tunes he came up with and never named. He showed me a legal pad, two columns on two pages, with song titles he had written. I saw some with just a line drawn in the space, and he said those were tunes he had that he hadn't named yet. Pretty remarkable.

He also wrote a fine tune called Farewell to Long Hollow that he never recorded. I first heard it on a James Bryan album. Later, the Warrior River Boys recorded it. I think some more bands have it recorded by now.

Doc Hamilton, Ret'd

slowhand - Posted - 08/18/2012:  06:59:34

Thanks, Fred and Doc. I had never heard of that tune until a couple of months ago when a fiddler played it a jam. I came home and couldn't find it in any of my Bear Family box sets and I was wondering if she might have had the title or the artist wrong when she said it was Northern White Clouds by Bill Monroe. It's a really beautiful and compelling tune. I'd like to see it become more well known in the bluegrass world.

I searched google for Jimmy Campbell, the fiddler who played that Opry set with Bill. He released Northern White Clouds on his own album, "Young Opry Fiddler" in 1993. I just downloaded the MP3 from Amazon. Mike Compton plays mandolin on the track.

robbif - Posted - 08/18/2012:  08:16:55

Jimmy Campbell put out two recordings, most of the mandolin parts with Compton, but a few with Monroe himself playing mandolin. He was one of the smoothest and most tasteful fiddlers ever to play. I never met him but I've talked with his mom, who says Jimmy's son and also brother are both fiddlers. I can recommend both of Jimmy's CDs.

The story is that Monroe had the tune Northern White Clouds already figured out, but had not name for it. On a tour somewhere up north, he saw the advertisement on the side of an 18-wheeler hawking Northern White Clouds toilet paper. I don't know if that's true, but it's a cool story.

cheers,

Doc Hamilton, Ret'd
