Hey all, new to the forum, happy to be here! Ive been playing for 10 years, used to play both acoustic and electric but now just acoustic. I am a big fan of Irish Traditional Folk, and one of my favorite artsist of it is Paul Brady, who's famous for his trad work in the 70s. A good example of his playing (which is very high-caliber, IMO is Arthur McBride (youtube.com/watch?v=cBGkhPx529g). But that isnt the song Im here about. THIS one, 'Heather On The Moor' (youtube.com/watch?v=izzUMZM0F90&t=227s) is. For the ones here who know theory, its in Drop D, capo 1st Fret, key of D#. i have the basic chords and can basically fake my way through the song, but that's not enough. there's some wicked tricky flatpicking going on in it, and my ears just can't make it out. If anyone could just help me figure out what's going on in a more advanced way, I'd appreciate it. Even if it's just figuring out the intricate patterns he's doing throughout. I figured that you guys are pretty used to hearing really complex things like this. Any help would be appreciated x1000, thanks a million for reading!!

Maybe I’m being naive. This is the first Irish tune I’ve tried to learn. But the picking pattern feels really natural in Open G tuning, capo on 1. You can play the main little riff thing with one finger, and it sounds pretty spot on to me. But I’ve only figured out that one part so far, the D, F#, G. Where did you find the rest of the chords?

Hi, I understand your problem, "my ears just can't make it out" - or I can hear a minor chord or a modulation. This might help you. I bought online a program called "Transcribe!" from 7th String Software. It was at that time $41.73 for registration and an activation key. It was downloaded immediately Forever for my use as long as I had that key if I had to download it again. Full documention how to use it in a huge help topics on all features.
It is fantastic. I take one of my classic country collection from I-Tunes, open it in this program: Then I can isolate small portions of it, put it in a loop for over & over play. I can slow it down with no distortion of the sound, I can change keys, It really helps me figure out - say a specific run or fill in, or tag. etc.

Hope this helps for a possible solution!
