Sound

I play bluegrass rhythm and old-timey rhythm. This guitar is a cannon - at least it seems to to me. I have experimented with a variety of strings and most seem to suit it. I play acoustic only, sometimes with a stand mike and I love the tone, sound, etc. Strings now are medium Elixer nanowebs and the guitar sounds fantastic!

Setup

After about 3 weeks, I had a setup done. Raised the action just a bit and kept playing. Now, 7 years into this guitar, no changes have been made.

Appearance

This is a plain, solid top guitar. The cedar has a warm reddish color. The matched pieces appear to be just right. The headstock has a plain painted logo and a flat brown paint. I would like to see a little more ornamentation, but I didn't pay for it, so I didn't get it. The paint on the headstock is scratched from my amateurish first attempts at changing strings. .

Reliability

The finish on the neck is wearing off a little, but that is because I play it. I want my guitar to look like I play it. The tuners, while probably not the best, seem to hold the strings well. I am still on the original bridge pins (ivory plastic with black dots). The finish on the body is flat and has a bit of a shiney spot where my right forearm rests.

I keep a sound hole humidifier in the guitar at all times in the case and notice that it stays in tune very well.

Components

This guitar has a slim, low profile neck. It is smooth and the action is fantastic. The frets are well finished and the fretboard seems to be high quality. I will probably need a fret dressing or replacement soon down in the "cowboy chord" positions - first three frets - but the guitar is 7 years old.

Overall Comments

I would definitely recommend this guitar. It can hold its own in any jam and has a wonderful tone. As I continue to play it, it just gets better and better - tone, playability, etc. When others play it, I am blown away by it. I love this guitar

If this guitar were stolen, I would go out and buy another just like it. Likely, it will go away to college next year, so I will be buying a new one just like it.

You can't beat the price for a solid top guitar! The Seagull S-6 is a fantastic value and is a wonderful instrument.
