My late brother Dave had a 1976 D-18 with a black pick-guard. When it started to come off, he took it to the luthier to be repaired. The luthier said it would have to be replaced, so Dave asked him to replace it with a tortoise coloured guard. It was a big improvement, though his was darker than yours. I prefer the lighter coloured tortoise.
I'd forgotten that it ever had a black guard till I saw your picture. His son Steve now has the guitar.
