More About Me

I am a touring singer/songwriter and guitarist from northern Virginia's Blue Ridge, and I've been playing for over 35 years and still love my instrument like a little kid. I have a small in-person teaching practice here at home when I am not on the road, and also do video lessons anywhere in North America.

I usually perform solo, so I am especially fond of developing solo arrangements of a wide variety of material. I also have a wide range of experience; I do play electric, also do some fingerstyle and slide, and continue to spend lots of time studying the techniques and musicality of great flatpickers like David Grier, Dan Crary and of course Doc. I am relentlessly learning new things on the instrument myself, both directly studying the guitar, and indirectly from the many musics I routinely sample from around the world.

I am told that I am a very encouraging teacher with lots of great insights into successful practicing and goal setting as well as learning the instrument. I use each student's own unique musical interests to highlight important music theory concepts, learn to read tablature and rhythm notation, as well as develop technique and optimize the fine motor skills in both hands.

At home and on the road, I sometimes also lead group guitar workshops, such as "First Steps to Flying Fingers", a beginning exploration of picking melodies to traditional American tunes, or workshops on songwriting and developing interesting guitar arrangements for solo performers.
