I've always liked this Norman Blake tune, and decided to try my hand at making a few breaks. The first is Tony Rice's intro on his version, and the other to are my own.
Sound quality isn't very good because I don't have a good mic.

hey all.
i have a request. this seems like the most appropriate forum.

im a banjo player leaning the tune "forked deer" and id like to have a nice solid backup to play over. can someone play backup for it and upload it for me? a moderate-fast tempo would be nice. i like to practice with a rhythm instrument to help with my timing and phrasing but i have no guitar for the moment :(

you could also email it to me at mikey5string AT aol.com.

thanks!

ill record me playing over it and upload it again too. an online jam!

Hello everybody!

This is my first post on the flatpicker-hangout. I started out six years ago as a banjo-player then got bored of it and solt it on ebay [8D]. Then I got myself an electric guitar, later an acoustic guitar. I wasn't that busy with the electric but with the acoustic I'm practising LOADS [:p].
To make a long story short I learned St. Anne's Reel the other day. Here it is for your to listen to:

an original "Waitin' on Ashley"

Hi guys, I'm new to guitar hangout, but really familiar with banjo hangout. I play guitar and stuff, but not like this guy can.... I wanted to show him off a little. His name is Andy Hatfield. He knows more in his pinky than I do in my feet and hands combined [:D]

This song is about Ashley Lewis, a great mandolin player and singer, who leads our band Ashton Gap. I was waiting patiently in the profuse rain one day outside her motorhome, and well, this title says it all...Waitin' on Ashley.

Please check out my home music page and listen to us play this tune, especially the flatpicking of Andy.

Don Reno's "Redeliverance"

Hello all....I thought I'd post what's probably my favorite instrumental, Don Reno's "Redeliverance", on myhangout's music page.....on the album notes, it claims Arthur Smith is on the recording as well, to what capacity I'm not sure, as it sounds like pure Reno all the way through on the record. I'm also guessing the title had something to do with Reno and Smith's lawsuit against the producers of the movie "Deliverance". Regardless, I'd loved it just the same if it didn't even have a title!...........the first half is sort of a cool jazz/blues feel to it, and the 2nd half picks up speed significantly.......I've received alot of kind words about my recording of this from some musicians I tremendously respect, and we had alot of fun recording it. I just hope the fun came through on the recording. I appreciate any and everyone who gives this a listen. Here's the link:

A Buck and a Quarter mp3

I uploaded a tune to the media page from a cd I recorded years ago. I'm hoping to get back into the studio for my next project soon. Meanwhile, this track is one I wrote called 'A Buck and a Quarter' and is on my cd, 'A Cut Above'. It's your basic 4 chord bluegrass diddy. Musicians on this cut besides myself are Alan O'Bryant (banjo), Steve Pruett (mandolin), Tuck Tucker (dobro), T. Michael Coleman (bass), Keith Tew (rhythm guitar) and Randy Howard (fiddle). This cd has been around a while so some of you may have heard it or even own one of the two copies I sold (lol). If it's new for you, I hope you enjoy this cut. It was tabbed for Flatpicking Guitar magazine at one time as well as Melbay, btw if anyone is interested in finding those.

I'd love to hear what you think. The good bad and ugly.

My brother and I are inventing a new genre of music.
It is composed of bluegrass with a banjo.
Check out this song and listen to the chromatic use of the banjo.
Thanks, all!!
I would appreciate comments. 8D

Here's another oldie I got from Dad and the gang. I think it was recorded by a fiddle-string band in Mississippi in the 1920's, and some others later. Ustabe, that all the fiddlers, mandolin and guitar pickers played this one. I use the 1934 000-18 for the lead, and a 1940's Kay archtop for the backup.

I wrote this on my Taylor guitar, then added other instruments. I s'pose it's rather newgrassy. Thanks,

Little Rock Getaway

I uploaded an mp3 of Little Rock Getaway to the media page. This track is from the cd 'Live From Winfield' and is the first tune of my first round of competition in the National Flatpicking competition, recorded straight from the sound board in 1997, the year that I won. The cd features all 4 of my tunes from that year, as well as both rounds of Cody Kilby and Mark Cosgrove from the respective years they won ( Cody '98, Mark '95). This cd was released in 1999 and has not been reprinted since so it's almost out of circulation now. Some of you may have it in your collection, for those that don't though here is a sample from it. My accompaniment was Randy Lucas, who happened to win the banjo contest that year as well. Hope you enjoy it and love to hear feedback.
