Lyrics wanted for It's Only A Coal Miners Grave

I would dearly love a copy of the lyrics. I have been trying to decipher from Hazel's own YouTube rendition (an amazing woman and fantastic song) but there are many parts I still cannot determine. I live in Hamilton, New Zealand, and last year we had our own Pike River mining disaster - 27 killed possible through the carelessness of management.

This is essentially a 'by ear' tuner...

It gives you the pitch, followed by several test chords in the key of G, then the key of C...

I've never tried to play along WITH John Hartford (via a recording) on this great tune, but I've worked this tune out in G and in C on the banjo numerous times...

I know from John's "How To" DVD with Homespun, that he plays it both in G and C, depending on what suits him...

On the guitar, it seems to work out much better in C, without a capo... And I'm sure it could be played out of C, but capoed up to the G position, if needed...

I'm calling this a "Chord Study"... It only has one verse and chorus... just enough to demonstrate the chord progression with the melody floating by...

The chord progression features a moving bass that causes the chords to resolve into each other as they move along, creating a very smooth and emotionally evocative sound that really draws your ears into the tune... it contrasts excellently with John's self-penned words and melody... as evidenced by it's supreme standings in the charts, back in the day...

The C chords aren't difficult to play... but the dm chords with moving bass are fairly challenging... you have to manage your fingers well and have excellent control of your pinky... using it in 2 different positions (4th and then 3rd frets)... while using all 3 of your other fingers to hold the main dm chord.

Give it a try and see what you think...

Auld Lang Syne (1-1-2012) - This is a double arrangement. The newer, jazzier version is the top staff and is turned on. The lower arrangement is the simpler, older arrangement I posted here yesterday and is here for comparison purposes. The old version is turned off. You can turn the tracks on or off via the Track Buttons in the upper right hand side of your TEFView or Tabledit screen. I also added fiddle and bass tracks to the arrangement for a fuller sound on playback.

I was looking for some common ground with a guitar student today and happened upon this old Warren Zevon tune...

It's not exactly a traditional or fiddle tune, but the chord progression (1, 4, 5 in the key of D) makes a good vehicle to practice flatpicking patterns over.

The licks in this arrangement are major scale based with occasional blues and pentatonic scales patterns thrown in for fun.

I also left some empty sections to act as backing rhythm tracks for those interested in jamming over this fun tune.

One of my students requested this tune for flat picked guitar...

I started the arrangement out with melody only, the first time through...

The second time, the lead guitar kicks in playing back-up in the form of arpeggiated licks...

Third time through, the lead guitar plays scale oriented BG riffs, which take different forms...

Last time through, the lead guitar repeats the arpeggiated licks part again...

The idea here is not to play the melody in hot-rod style... that seemed out of place for an old gospel tune, instead, the lead guitar adds the country charm of various types of flat picked riffage to add background and ambience to the tune.

I have this set up as a Fakebook arrangement, meaning the melody is on top in a harmonica voice to replicate a singer... later, that voice becomes a church organ to put it in the background a little bit, while the guitar steps out to dress-up the tune.

I just got hooked up with a nice illustration program, Inkscape... FREE!

Joe Downes from the Banjo Hangout told me about it...

Anyway, I used it to produce a blank chord diagram sheet...

I use these for writing chords out for my students.... and sometimes for my self to write out new chord progression ideas in diagram form...

Of course, this one in in open-position only...

I will be putting together some full length neck diagrams before long...

In the mean time, enjoy the free diagram provided...

Got to see Larry Sparks and his band perform at Smokey Mountain Guitars last night in Pigeon Forge, Tn. They put on a great show. Larry really wore that old guitar of his out. He really believes in playing that Martin for all its worth. Think they are playing in Brstol, Tn/Virginia tonight.

An old old finger style picking or flat pick either one I would love to have this to learn , so anyone out there that has the ability I sure would be grateful for that tune on tabledit . I have the tab for it but don't know how to write it to the soft ware . I have found it is a super way of getting what I call the mechanics of the tune and then playing it with good timing . slow it down is the key to my learning.

I wish someone would tab out a good version of the " Guitar boogie shuffle" I realize there may be copy right laws involved but if someone could do that legally I would be very grateful indeed ,.It just seems to me a piece that every guitarists should know . I know that this site has not been up that long but I have learned much from the tabs that are on here and I take this time to thank each and every contributor to the list of tabs we have here.

I use Finale 2010 software. I'd like to be able to make guitar chord frame diagrams (you know, those grids with the dots where the fingers go) and chord charts, but can't figure out how to create/edit frames. Anyone have experience with making chord diagrams in Finale? Is it possible??

Hey folks,

I would like to learn the tune Rebecca. I had the very good fortune last week at the Rockygrass academy to jam with a rockin fella named Don and another fella named Jerry Sutton (Bryan Sutton's dad). Both of them rocked this tune, and I had never heard of it.

The only set of tabs that I found are on Jack Tuttle's site, but i'd like a different version.

So... questions arise... 1. Does anybody have an alternate tab, or... 2. Would you suggest learning this by ear?
