I would dearly love a copy of the lyrics. I have been trying to decipher from Hazel's own YouTube rendition (an amazing woman and fantastic song) but there are many parts I still cannot determine. I live in Hamilton, New Zealand, and last year we had our own Pike River mining disaster - 27 killed possible through the carelessness of management.

Kalamazoo guitars

Hey everybody; A newby here got a lot time on banjo hangout but this is first for guitar hangout. Question?

I am wondering if there is any Kalamazoo guitar collectors on Flatpickers Hangout? I am trying to locate any KG1 's acoustic guitars. I have owned one for about 40 years and have never found one like it. Either I got the only one or the last one ,not sure yet.

The KG1 is similar to LGO Gibson except no truss rod.

It sounds great on old country tunes. Falls a little short on BG music but that is work for my D18s

Hope i am not to far out line with my question. If I am let me know.

Can Anyone Identify This Big Band?

It's a long shot, but I'd like to identify the band in this picture. It includes my grandfather, Frank Sigmon (2nd from right, on piano). I don't know when it was taken, but he was born in 1905, and based on his appearance, I would guess this was 1930-1935. He lived in Lenoir, NC, and moved to Harriman, TN around 1930. You can see a cool art drum head and the music stand logos read "GP" and "BS" if that helps.

Greetings Music Lovers,

My name is Barry R. Willis; I wrote "America's Music: Bluegrass - A History
of Bluegrass Music in the Words of Its Pioneers" which came out in 1997. It
was purely a love of the music that I wrote it, but customers seemed to like
it so I'm ready to take it to the next level.

I want to place the ninety hours of interviews used to create it into an
interactive format so that customers can hear the actual conversation I
had with the individual.

I'm sure bluegrass fans will LOVE to hear these actual interviews. Many
of the people I interviewed are gone now. Hearing their voices brings
them to us live.

I will also bring up-to-date the Appendix in the book which lists the births
and deaths of hundreds of people in bluegrass. And, as necessary, bring some
of the original book chapters up-to-date. Extensive linking is necessary to
make this a really interactive and interesting book.

I need a "techie" who loves bluegrass who has the capability of helping
bring this to life. The interviews and new photos and videos will be placed
on a server and be accessed from a computer. The original book can fit on
one DVD, but the huge library of interviews cannot be done in the same way;
they must be placed remotely for people to access via an internet server.

Pay? The pay is as a partner with me. The pay comes after the product comes
out. So, the better the product is done, the more the pay. I will also
solicit sponsors.

1.3.14 is now the only version that supports Windows 7, Windows Vista

and Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.7. Please upgrade to 1.3.14 if you are using

Audacity 1.2 on those systems. You can install Audacity Beta on the same

computer as Audacity 1.2 if you install to different directories. If you are

upgrading from a previous Beta release, you can install "over the top"

into the same directory.

Rhonda Vincent celebrates this holiday season with a new single titled "When You're Holding Me" released on 11/22/2011; which features reso wizard *Brent Burke, the newest addition to her band The Rage.

As a new member joins The Rage; they also celebrate Hunter Berry's 10 year membership. Hunter Berry became the fiddle player for the The Rage when he was 17 years old on November 23, 2001. Hunter was honored on stage with a plaque commemorating ten years with the MOST Awarded Group in Bluegrass Music.

2011 was a busy year for Rhonda Vincent & The Rage; with over 140 appearances, 19 days in Europe, and a special performance at Pearl Harbor.

The group is currently in the studio creating an all gospel DVD/CD that was filmed in Rhonda’s hometown of Greentop, Missouri. Watch for a 2012 release.

Brent is slated to make his first official appearance with The Rage on December 10, 2011 at the Grand Ole Opry; scheduled to broadcast from the historical Ryman Auditorium.

I have played guitar (mainly rythym) but want to start playing and learning tabulature. Does anyone have any good advise on how to start, finger positions etc? I want to make sure i don't start any bad habits that will be hard to break.

I just heard some news over the internet - the E Z Folk website is gone.

No more soundfiles, individual people's pages and such.

I'm sure all of those people are bumming. Maybe they can find another place to do their folk stuff, another folk site, that is. There must be some other folky website for them to post their stuff to. Glad we have a website specifically devoted for flatpicking, and I hope it never goes belly-up like the E Z Folk one did.

Learning to sing

Just curious if you guys had any tips/advice or knew of any good online resources for learning to sing. My son has started singing in his band and I feel like he could really benefit from some type of formal instruction. He’s got a nice voice but, at this point, no real idea of how to use it.

If you’re like me, singing is just something you do without thinking too much about it (and it shows, at least in my case). So when I’m working with him on his singing, I hear myself saying helpful things like “Sing louder!” or “You’re off pitch there!” But in terms of helping him fix those problems, I’ve got nothing. I know there are techniques and exercises galore for volume, projection, pitch, etc. and so on that “professional” vocalists use but that’s a world I’m totally clueless about.

Any idears?

By the way, this could help me too…

I just "discovered" (exhumed and dusted off) some more 35mm slides from 1979.

I was visiting my buddy Wayne, the one who so graciously lent me the scanner I've been using to share so many photos with you.

We went to see a rehearsal and a taping of ACL with Johnny Gimble, the Texas Swing Pioneers, the Bosque Bandits.

We found a very relaxed, friendly, great venue and show, amazing for something free!

I want to thank 2 guys from the Texas Swing Kings (http://www.texasswingkings.com/sk_home.htm) for help identifying the artists: Howard Kalish (fiddle) and longtime friend Robert Pool (bass).

You'll see Robert, possibly Fred Gumaer, and Dan DelSanto (now deceased) in the photos. They were in a band here in Poughkeepsie in the 1970s called the Arm Bros.; that's how we met. A few years ago Robert and other band members helped me put together their music and photos at http://frobbi.org/armbros/index.html

Interestingly, Terry Lickona, then the ACL producer and now executive producer, is a native of Poughkeepsie, NY, just a few miles from where I live. He used to have a country show here on local radio station WPDH-FM, which is now all rock.

We did the best we could to identify everyone, but any feedback is welcome.

Learning Dobro

A quick disclaimer. I did not post this on the Dobro forum because I don't play Dobro. Having said that, here is my question. Can you learn to play dobro on a round-neck resonator with one of those extension nuts that raises up the strings. I have an opportunity to get one. Honoring Rabon Delmore and The Delmore Brothers

As part of the 3rd Annual Tenor Guitar Gathering planned for June 1-3, 2012 in Astoria, Oregon, Rabon Delmore will become the second inductee to The Tenor Guitar Hall of Fame. Nick Reynolds, of The Kingston Trio, was inducted on June 3, 2011, and his son, Josh Reynolds, accepted the honor.

Here's the thing.....

I believe that Rabon Delmore's contribution to music, and he is inseparable from older brother, Alton, who bought him a tenor guitar for $11 in Birmingham, Alabama before 1926.....needs to be honored in a much bigger way than I could ever do it.

I have some very big plans, but I cannot accomplish them on my own.

1. I would like the C.F. Martin company to issue a special Rabon Delmore Commemorative tenor guitar just like the one that is now in the Country Music Hall of Fame. (Martin issued a Nick Reynolds commemorative tenor guitar...)

2. I would like some prominent artists who are perhaps from Alabama, or prominent artists who are familiar with how import the Delmore Brothers were and are, to put together a tribute band to play the night Rabon Delmore is inducted to The Tenor Guitar Hall of Fame, and to have them finance paying to have Debby Delmore, the youngest daughter of Alton Delmore, flown from Alabama to Oregon.....and back.....to receive the award given to her Uncle Rabon Delmore.

3. I have purchased TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN PUBLICITY, by Alton Delmore. The book is only available if you make a phone call to the Country Music Hall of Fame, which I did, and have it mailed to you. It's a 300 page book, and I'm only on page 41, but I can tell you....this book is something rare and special. The late Charles K. Wolfe, from Murfreesboro, TN, literally found the writings and had it published in 1977, calling it "the Rosetta Stone of Country Music" because, while there is plenty written about country music after WWII, there is nothing or little, except for Alton's book, that tells about country music before that time. I'm no sure if anyone out there can help me, but here goes.

I inherited this blonde Les Paul Copy from my dad when he passed away in 1993 and I'd like to know more about it.

He had several guitars, so I have no idea where or when he got it.

As you can see, there's no name on the headstock and no markings in the neck pocket or under the pups.

The only "name" on it is 'BLUE SKY' engraved on the neckplate.

All of the hardware that would normally be plastic is hand engraved brass, including the pickguard and the covers on the back.

I was looking around, and I was surprised not to see this thread :O if I missed it, sorry, please delete this ^^;

My name is David and I am a newbie to bluegrass. Really, I got into it from a few slightly embarrassing ways. 1. I started watching Jubilee (a Kentucky based PBS channel, not embarrassing) and I was impressed, but got more into Woodsongs, but that lead back to Jubilee and bluegrass 2. O Brother Where Art Thou, great movie with an amazing sound track 3. The Andy Griffith Show I really need to get more into it and I appreciate recommendations. I love the breakdown instrument kind of music, not the slow kind so much. I have been blown away by Berline Crary Hickman, they are the main group I have discovered. I enjoy stringed instruments and I learned to play electric guitar but switched to acoustic because I am movie and my gear was bad. I plan on getting either a mandolin or 6 string banjo soon. My guitars at the moment are a 60s Dixon Hummingbird (copy of a Gibson, better imo) and a 70s Yamaha FG 312 12 string. I am into a LOT of genres, but not so versed in as many as I would like. I rather enjoy ANYTHING musical, and technical. I enjoy Bluegrass, Celtic, Classical, Blues, Folk, Classic Rock, and a rather extensive list of metal genres and so on. I love music!

Cannot make up my mind

I hope I'm putting this in the right spot. I figured because it doesn't have to do with flatpicking the guitar I would post here.

So, I have been debating between which instrument to go with; tenor banjo or bouzouki. I have always had a soft spot for the banjo (no matter the style) and I do play tenor guitar so they both go together. Only thing is I would tune the banjo GDAE while my tenor guitar is CGDA (only because it wouldn't support GDAE, but they're just a fifth off and I've 11 or so years of music theory). But anyway, I've just always loved banjos, and enjoy a properly played tenor very much. Not say that I'd be that proper which is where my hesitation to get a banjo comes. Banjo's one of those instruments where you're either good or your bad and if your bad it's really bad. But I still would like to give it go.

But then on the other hand, I have fallen in love with the bouzouki over the past couple of years. I have had a stint with the mandolin, and again I feel like it wouldn't be too bad of a transition because of tenor guitar. I just love the mellow sound the instrument produces. I also feel as though perhaps the bouzouki may be a bit more versatile for both tunes and chords. I'm not so worried about the scale length. I've been told that the scale length can make the bouzouki a bit difficult but I have long piano fingers. And besides, all instruments have their difficulties.

Just wondering what everyone's opinions are or if anyone has any experience with either or both of these instruments. I really could go either way, but can only afford one at the mo' ... eventually I would get the other, but where to start!

Martin 0 size ,brazilian back, plain ebony fretboard, nylon string bridge and setup, paddle headstock with white tuning pegs. Definitely a rare beast. Bought used from Candelas guitars in 1958 in East L.A. Notice my strap, either one of dad's old neckties or the tie for my bathrobe. At that time in my life I had not yet had my eye operations and had very poor vision,(as you can probably tell), that guitar was my world!!
