Thanks!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone here who is actively posting music, pictures, giving advice , " liking " the tunes and commenting on new posted music. I try to visit here, post music and contribute as often as possible. Flatpicker hangout still seems slow at times and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who is keeping this small community fun and interesting. Until next time..... keep on pickin'!

tab for guitar

I wish someone would tab out a good version of the " Guitar boogie shuffle" I realize there may be copy right laws involved but if someone could do that legally I would be very grateful indeed ,.It just seems to me a piece that every guitarists should know . I know that this site has not been up that long but I have learned much from the tabs that are on here and I take this time to thank each and every contributor to the list of tabs we have here.

Replies only editable for 15 minutes - Can we have it, PRETTY PLEASE!

I was wondering whether we can have the same deal as the banjo hangout, where your replies are only editable for 15 minutes. I think that would solve some problems, at least for me. That way members wouldn't be able to post offending words, put downs, name-calling, etc., and then go back a day or so later and delete them, and act like nothing happened.

Case in point: a few days back Steve (SLKmartin) didn't care for the innocent humor on the "How many Rock guitarists" thread, so he posted this:

	quote:

As usual, the flat heads like to make fun of what they cant do or dont understand. It takes only one Rocker to be a star it takes two thousand wanabe tonys' to play the same old solo, whiskey before breakfast, and put down banjo players. Cry babies. Lil imagination , less testosterone. Talk about covers!

The bold face and font size are his. Now someone calling me a "flat head," or "wanabe (sic) tony" or a "crybaby" isn't really a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but after a couple of years of this, it's getting really annoying. As usual, he's gone back and deleted the original post. But a few of us have been getting in the habit of quoting him, so there will be a record.

This happens OVER and OVER and it is getting annoying as heck. He's called flatpickers names before and put down flatpickers and flatpicking, but I have almost no examples to give because he goes back and deletes it every time! Then he will act “nice” and “helpful” to make people forget, until the next outburst and the cycle starts all over again.

He’s deleted/edited several post in the last couple of days because of this. Every time you see a post of his that's been "edited" it means the offending comments and put-downs have been taken out; it does NOT mean that he went back and corrected spelling, grammar or punctuation, I assure you. Just go back and look at the number of his posts that say “edited” if you don’t believe me.

I know this seems to bug me more than some other members, but I know it does bother others as well. Someone name–calling and put-downs of flatpickers on a flatpicker website? Sorry, but I don’t get it. Some people don’t seem bothered by it, but I’m sorry, I am. I will gladly join the FHO Union if we can get this on the site.

So Eric, PLEASE PLEASE can we have the 15 minute edit time-limit here on FHO?

Most forums that I have been a part of, always seem to have an "Introduction Section" of some sort, mostly so that new people can say howdy. It gives them a chance to participate in the forum without feeling like an outsider who isn't familiar with some of the ongoing discussions. Any chance there could be an additional sub-forum here for something like that? Or isn't there enough new traffic to justify it?

Making a better online Flatpicking community.

This post was inspired by something DaddyJ said in one of the innumerable threads about whether or not the scope of this website should be expanded to encompass all acoustic guitar styles:

quote:
I’m also a little perplexed as to why the conversation isn’t, “How can we make this a better, more vibrant flatpicking community?” instead of, “Hey! Let’s shift the focus away from flatpicking!” There’s this automatic assumption that flatpicking is the problem. Maybe it’s not the problem.

So, for those who want to keep this a flatpick-centric website, let's have that conversation.

Assuming that Eric ultimately decides to keep this site focused on flatpicking (which I think is unlikely, but let's assume it anyway) what could be done here to attract more flatpickers and generate more activity on the site?

Here are my suggestions:

1. Moderate the content postings (videos and MP3s) and remove the ones that don't contain at least some flatpicking. The ones that are already here could be grandfathered in, and stay.

2. Put a list of the 5 most recent MP3s on the front page. Don't make people have to find the "Newest Additions" page to find them.

3. Put a "Newest Blog Posts" section on the front page for member's blogs posts, similar to the "Latest Forum Topics" section. Perhaps it could replace the News Blog section, which rarely changes.

5. Moderate the forum posts to keep off-topic threads in the "Off-Topic" forum section.

6. Don't show threads in the "Off-topic" section in the "Latest Forum Topics" list on the front page.

7. Have a list of the most recent comments posted on the front page, excluding those in the "Off-Topic" section. This is great for getting a lot of people involved in discussions.

It only stands to reason, that flatpickers will be drawn to a flatpicking website. But for the most part, this site has been flatpicking-centric in name only. All kinds of non-flatpicking music has been posted here, and nobody complained, but when nobody paid special attention to it a lot of the people who posted started to agitate to change the site. And in the meantime, any flatpickers that happened by would see a lot of non-flatpicking content and a lot of arguing. Not really that enticing to a flatpicker, IMO.

So to sum up, I think this site should totally, unapologetically, devoted to flatpicking, to the express exclusion of everything else. It was the good nature and tolerance of the flatpickers toward those who never had any interest in flatpicking that created the situation we're now in. It was a case of the bad driving out the good, and I think that to make this into the single most vibrant online flatpicking community, that trend will have to be reversed.

Suggestion for another sub-category

How about adding a category:

Shows, Gigs and Festivals

or something similar, to organize these items.
Ppl can post show times/venues, previews, reviews, raves, etc.

Thx.

Flatpicker vs. Acoustic POLL

I think there is still a lot of debate over if this site should be the flatpicker hangout, or the acoustic guitar hangout. How about everyone vote by posting on this thread?

If you like the Flatpicker Hangout as it is, type "1" in your post.

If you want it changed to Acoustic Guitar Hangout, type "2" in your post.

Please do not write why, and please only vote once. Just type the number 1 or 2.

GuitarHangout

I think that this should be guitar hangout and not flatpicker hangout. It would bring a lot more people here. You could have sub forum categories for different styles, just like BHO has a place for Clawhammer and Scruggs. We were talking about it here http://www.flatpickerhangout.com/pages/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8384
