Since "Sunny Side of the Mountain" introduced me to so many friends on here, here's another "Crosspicked" guitar song, the old classic "Will the Circle Be Unbroken".....I'm playing this in the key of Long A, then D, then jumping up to G. Hope you all like it, thanks so much for listening!

my version of salt creek

This is my first flat picking tune. I played electric guitar for a number of years and then quit playing for 8 yrs!

When i first checked out bluegrass 2 months ago i was blown away by flat picked guitar. It inspired me to try to play again! This is my first attempt at my interpretation of Salt Creek. I'll apologize ahead of time for the terrible sound quality and I'd appreciate any feedback when you have time. Thanks in advance, Randall

Lyrics wanted for It's Only A Coal Miners Grave

I would dearly love a copy of the lyrics. I have been trying to decipher from Hazel's own YouTube rendition (an amazing woman and fantastic song) but there are many parts I still cannot determine. I live in Hamilton, New Zealand, and last year we had our own Pike River mining disaster - 27 killed possible through the carelessness of management.
I would like to sing this at our next Bluegrass concert - I play guitar and 5-string banjo. I look forward to any help someone may be able to give me. Many thanks in anticipation, Paul Corboy - email: hawkeye@xtra.co.nz

Snap noise when tuning

Back in Dec. I posted a problem I had when tuning. I would get a snap sound on a couple of strings just before they reached the final adjustment. However none of the suggestions I received solved the problem.

Last week I was picking with some friends and I asked one of them to check out my guitar. (He is a luthier and has built several guitars himself) He de-tuned it and while bringing it back up he heard the snap sound on two of the strings. The problem was the slots in the nut were just a little too tight for the strings (the dept was perfect but not wide enough and were binding a little when the tension was getting up to tune. Carefully I sanded about 1 or 2 thousands off the side of the nut slot and this solved the problem.

	Hi All --

Just a heads up here for anyone in or around middle Tennessee this weekend. We will be showing our line of Cumberland Acoustic parts and accessories (mandolin bridges, armrests, pickguards, string winders, etc.) and our full line of RedLine Acoustic instruments, which include our Traveler mandolins, RedLine Resophonic guitars, and RedLine Acoustic Guitars, which include our Advanced Parlor guitar, our version of a Slope-D guitar, and our version of a '30's vintage Dreadnought.

We will be in the "free" room this year, so anyone can come and see us, no event ticket needed. We'll be set-up right next to Tom T. and Dixie Halls booth, so we should be easy to find. Come by and see us!

Passive guitar pickup

Just before Christmas I went into the local music store and was just buying strings..... I made the mistake of looking in the "acoustic guitar room". As I was perusing the inventory my eyes fell upon this 12 string. The peghead said Epiphone, the truss rod cover said "Gibson". It was used, but pristine. I mean pristine. The neck was straight, and not a scratch on it. According to the folks at the store, the owner was "tired of the limitations of a 12 string" and traded it in on a 6 string. I bit down hard and looked at the price tag....$200. Yeah,.... I bought it and absolutely love it. Under the tree, my bride bought me the Acoustic amp I had been looking at. Now I want to buy a pick up. I am leaning towards a passive pickup because I do not want to cut into the guitar. The folks at the music store are recommending the Seymour Duncan SA-3H "Woody". Everything I read about them seems to be good. What say you lads?

Howdy, I have 3 sets of Martin M545, Light/Medium, .0125-.0550, Phosphor Bronze that I would like to trade for something else. I am in the quest for the 'Right" string for one of my acoustics.

Would prefer something in lights and Phos Bronze, but will consider all others also

	Thanks for looking

This might be old news to some, but if you have Netflix they have several instructional and documentary DVDs related to bluegrass, flatpicking, and old time music. I've checked out most of what they have. Some of the instructional videos are decent, some not so much. I've enjoyed the documentaries and live performance recordings. Some of these are available for viewing online.

Rhythm play along

Hello everyone. I've been wanting to improve on my rhythm playing and was wanting to know if there are some "play along" CD's/Books out there of the more common jam session tunes and songs that have the melody and leads, but not the rhythm guitar parts. I know most of the play along material on the market is the other way around - the rhythm tracks are there and you play the melody / lead - but I am hoping that there are some of the other. I am wanting to explore more into my rhythm playing and get more creative with the bass runs and fills and I believe that some play alongs would be great. Thanks.

They were one of several similar designs in different colors.

Tuners for Martin D1-R

Hi - I bought this Martin at a garage sale. It's a little dinged up but otherwise in good mechanical order and has a gorgeous sound The tuners are a little loose and I would like to replace them. I'm thinking Grover Sta-Tites 18:1. Has anyone done this job? I'm wondering if I should order bushings too? Would those be the 10.5mm?

Playing with a bass player

I have always played in small groups where there was no bass player - usually a couple guitars, a mando, at times a harmonica player, but no bass player. As much as I love to play melody and lead lines, I always volunteer to be the rhythm player - only because I know the other guitar player much prefers to play lead so I just give it to him :) Because there has never been a bass player, I would always play a bit heavily on the bass runs to "hold down the fort". So now, there will be a bass player coming to our little get together sessions and I am looking for advice and tips from those that have played with bass players. My concern is that I don't walk on his playing, and vice versa. Tips?...

Telecaster string gauge?

This might be a little off topic in a flatpicking forum but this question is for you who play both electric and acoustic guitars. I used to play the Telecaster playing country many years ago but turned towards the acoustic playing bluegrass and acoustic country. I haven´t touched the Tele for at least 5 years. Now I am about to buy a new Tele and doin som Twanging again. The strings I used on the Tele was .010 and when I switched to the acoustic I settled for .013 medium gauge. I am thinking about what stringgauge I should ask them to put on the Tele at the musicstore when they do a setup. I am thinking .011 would be a good choice since I am used to playing heavy strings nowadays and have a harder attack. .010 would feel to soft for me. I don´t have any problems with bending elevens a whole step but tens would definatly be smoother. What´s your opinion on this topic? The step between 10 and 13, switching back and forth between the acoustic and the electric seems to big for me.

Traveling Pick Collection.....any interest?

Greetings, I saw this somewhere else and thought it was an interesting idea.....and hopefully a relatively simple one.

In my quest for the holy grail of Picks I have (like some of you) amassed a number of picks of one kind or another that do not work for me. They might for you. However, it can at times become expensive to purchase more picks to try.

Here's the deal. Basically someone puts together a bag of picks that they send to another person to try. Upon receipt, the recipient try's out the picks for a few days....adds their donation of picks to the bag and sends them on the the next recipient. It is for the recipient to "Test Drive" and not to keep. It would however help to solidify in the players mind some things that might work and others that won't....Sooo, you save a little money. It is a good opportunity to try a lot of different brands, styles and materials without laying out any change first. To often I have to purchase "sight unseen" without the advantage of trying before buying.

This is not carved in stone and can be changed to work better...at any time.

IF...there is any interest, I would try to work out some details and get started. I have at least 15 or 20 picks I can get the ball rolling with including one of the Gravity picks I purchased the other day (I will be keeping two others). Sooo.....please weigh in with your thoughts and interest level????

New from Steve Clayton...Nutone

Well, I don't know how new they are but I just ran across these on the Steve Clayton site:

	http://www.steveclayton.com/premium.php

Nutone - Said to be another material that resembles the tone and feel of real tortoise shell. Of course alot of companies say this, but whenever a new pick comes out that claims to be the next best thing to tortoise, I know I have to give it a try :) I did a quick online search for them and can't find them for sale anywhere. Perhaps they are still too new. I am going to shoot the Clayton company an email asking about their availability and where to buy them. If anyone else knows where to get them, please reply. If not, and when I hear back from Clayton I'll be sure to post it here.

Kalamazoo guitars

Hey everybody; A newby here got a lot time on banjo hangout but this is first for guitar hangout. Question?

I am wondering if there is any Kalamazoo guitar collectors on Flatpickers Hangout? I am trying to locate any KG1 's acoustic guitars. I have owned one for about 40 years and have never found one like it. Either I got the only one or the last one ,not sure yet.

The KG1 is similar to LGO Gibson except no truss rod.

It sounds great on old country tunes. Falls a little short on BG music but that is work for my D18s

Hope i am not to far out line with my question. If I am let me know.

	Thanks

Flat tuning anyone?

I've been playing for about thirty years and have always tuned my electric down a half-step just because that,s the way Jimi and Edward did it....I will continue to do so because I'm used to it now.

However, until around six months ago, I had always tuned my flat-tops and mandolin to standard pitch...partly to avoid tuning conflicts with various fiddle, bass and banjo players, and because I was paranoid about acoustic instruments being sensitive to anything outside of their original design parameters.

Like i said, about six months ago, I tuned my D-16 down a half-step on a lark to better fit my voice on a particular tune, and then capoed up to standard on the next tune. I've found that i REALLY like the resulting feel, both open and with the capo, as well as the easing of the wear and tear on my voice.

Does anyone else do this on their acoustic? Can anyone think of a reason why I shouldn't?

Electric, cutaway guitars vs non cutaway acoustic guitars

Hi, I feel that non cutaway acoustic guitars seem to have more " soul" in them than cutaway acoustics and electric guitars. Non cutaway acoustic guitar ( of course not all of them) seem to have fuller, richer and complex sound to them. Any opinion?.

	 (2) the part that IS highlighted will take you to a page that says “Thank you for your interest. We have validated your vote previously.” and your vote will NOT count!
(3) if you copy and paste everything IN between < and > (including the final “}” which doesn’t look hot-linked), you will get “Thank you for validating your vote.” and the vote tally changes immediately for the song of your choice.

	Enjoy. Jim

Brush technique !:D

Okey, i got a tips from Fpey that i rest my wrist on the bridge to much. So i been working on the brush technique he taught me. And for about 1 hour ago i started to learn a new song (Texas gales) and i could play it "superfast" and with clean tone. Thats the fastest i played ever, and it acctually sounds good! I also watched my dvd i got with Bryan Sutton, and learned a better way to hold the pick aswell.

So thanks for that advice :D!
